In 1956 Sid Goodloe purchased a brush-covered, over-grazed, drought-stricken ranch in the South Central Mountains of New Mexico.  The price was right and the potential was there.  Vegetation management, water development and cross fencing was planned and implemented as money became available from the sale of firewood, fence posts, vigas and fee hunting.
Today Carrizo Valley Ranch is a model of planned grazing, watershed rehabilitation, wildlife habitat enhancement and forest health.  Our Alpine Black cattle fit this environment.  They are bred for marketability without hormones or antibiotics and are fed on native grasses and browse.  Holistic management and rotational grazing not only produce high quality natural beef, but play a vital role in healing a debilitated landscape.  A large portion of the ranch exhibits a pre-1850 viewscape that includes open savannahs as well as ample tree-covered areas providing cover and storm protection for cattle and wildlife.  Much of this grass-covered open space was the result of re-introducing the natural fire regime into the ecosystem as it was in pre-settlement times.    into the ecosystem as it was in pre-settlement times.
Not only is this landscape aesthetically pleasing to the eye but also controls soil erosion and improves surface flow and aquifer recharge.

A hunting lodge built in 1959 is available for fee hunters and seasonally as a get-away for couples or small families.  Carrizo Valley Ranch has recently recorded a Conservation Easement on the entire property that guarantees  it will be protected from development and remain as an operating ranch in perpetuity.
A small saw mill was purchased recently to utilize the small-diameter trees provided by our forest thinning project.  The band-saw mill produces standard and custom cut lumber for sale.  Walt’s complete furniture shop on the ranch produces western style tables, chairs, cabinets, buffets, etc., to complement homes with southwestern décor.
Sid and Cheryl currently reside on the ranch as do daughter and son-in-law, Sherry & Walt Evans and our two granddaughters, Cheyenne and Callie.  We hope to continue to raise our families’ children in this rural environment for many years to come
